Pharmacy Technician

By: BLS.gov

Job Description
Pharmacy technicians help licensed pharmacists provide medication to patients. Technicians typically perform routine tasks such as counting tablets and labeling bottles. They also may answer phones, stock shelves, and provide customer service. However, pharmacy technicians do not answer questions about prescriptions. Responsibilities may vary by state, but technicians usually receive requests to fill prescriptions, verify information, and prepare the medication. Depending on the facility, pharmacy technicians may also deliver prescriptions to a patient.

Median Salary
$20,500

Education Requirements
Pharmacy technicians may receive on-the-job training, but most employers prefer those who have been formally trained and certified, although few states have a certification process. Formal education includes coursework in pharmacy law and ethics, pharmaceutical terminology, and pharmacy record-keeping. Many training programs include internships so that candidates receive hands-on experience. Diploma, certificate, and associate programs are available.

Job Outlook
Job opportunities are expected to be very good for pharmacy technicians. Employment is predicted to grow by 32% through 2016 because of the increased number of middle-aged and elderly people who receive prescription drugs. Scientific advancement in the pharmaceutical industry also means an increased number of people taking prescription medications that must be filled.
